Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is designed to alleviate your psychological suffering and improve your quality of life. We support you in dealing intensively with yourself and the factors that burden you. In this way, you can change your own experience and behavior and learn strategies to help yourself. The effectiveness of psychotherapy in the treatment of mental illness has been scientifically proven and recognized. We now know that the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is the key factor in the effectiveness of psychotherapy. Mental and physical illnesses are defined in international classification systems such as the ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases). If the criteria for a (mental) illness are met, the corresponding diagnosis can be made.
Diagnostic evaluation
In medicine, diagnostics refer to the comprehensive set of measures aimed at identifying (diagnosing) or ruling out an illness. In psychiatry, a thorough diagnostic assessment involves gathering medical history, conducting a psychopathological examination, clinical observation, and, if necessary, physical examinations, as well as test and questionnaire assessments.
Diagnostic evaluations are warranted when there is suspicion of a specific mental illness that needs confirmation or dismissal. For instance, parents or teachers may observe inattentiveness, difficulty concentrating, and restlessness in a child, prompting concerns about Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) that require evaluation. Similarly, individuals experiencing symptoms may seek diagnostic clarification to understand the origin of their distress. For instance, appetite disturbances may manifest in depression, eating disorders, or anxiety disorders.
Accurate diagnosis facilitates targeted treatment, as it guides us in identifying the most effective therapeutic approaches for specific conditions.
Medical treatment
In cases where a mental illness is diagnosed, treatment with medication—commonly known as psychotropic drugs—can be beneficial. For instance, antidepressants are prescribed for moderate to severe depressive episodes, severe anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorders, while psychostimulants are utilized for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Prior to initiating drug treatment, a thorough diagnosis and physical examination are always conducted. and medication is often used in conjunction with psychotherapy. Medication is always part of a treatment plan that also includes psychotherapy.
Our team includes medical specialists who administer drug treatments, providing you with the advantage of streamlined and prompt implementation.
Guidance Consultation
At Praxis Psycura, we offer a so-called Guidance Consultation—an initial appointment designed to provide you with orientation and clarity regarding the next steps for your mental health. This service is particularly aimed at individuals who have not yet had contact with psychiatric, psychological, or psychotherapeutic support networks and require an initial professional assessment.
Why do we offer this consultation?
Unfortunately, due to limited capacity, we are not always able to offer treatment slots. However, occasional short-term openings arise, allowing us to provide clients with initial guidance and a diagnostic assessment of their situation. Our goal is to help you plan your next steps and understand what options are available to you.
What to expect during the Guidance Consultation:
An initial assessment of your current situation and a possible diagnostic classification.
Clarification of whether there is a suspected mental health condition.
Recommendations for further diagnostic or therapeutic steps.
What is not included:
This is a one-time initial consultation—ongoing therapy is generally not provided.
No medications are prescribed, and no prescriptions or medical certificates are issued.
No immediate therapeutic treatment.
After the consultation, you will receive a report summarizing the key aspects discussed, allowing you to make an informed decision about your next steps.
Coverage of costs: The costs for the Guidance Consultation are covered by health insurance.
Important notice: The Guidance Consultation is not an emergency consultation. If you are in acute danger to yourself or others, experiencing altered perception, or facing other emergencies, we strongly urge you to contact the emergency services in Zurich directly. The Guidance Consultation is not a substitute for long-term psychotherapeutic support.
Counseling for Pregnant Adolescents
We also provide psychiatric and psychological assessments and counselling for pregnant adolescents – including the mandatory counselling session required for those under 16 – as well as support for their families.

Case Evaluations for Continuing Psychological Psychotherapy Beyond 30 Sessions
Since 1 July 2022, psychotherapy provided by cantonally licensed psychological psychotherapists has been covered by the basic health insurance in Switzerland.
To obtain coverage for psychological psychotherapy, a medical referral is required. This referral initially authorizes 15 psychotherapy sessions.
After these first 15 sessions, an exchange between the referring physician and the psychological psychotherapist is necessary to determine whether an additional 15 sessions should be medically authorized.
If psychotherapy is still required after a total of 30 sessions, the health insurer must grant prior authorization. For this, the insurer requires a case evaluation, which must be conducted by a psychiatrist. The purpose of this evaluation is to provide a well-founded clinical assessment that supports both the treating psychologist and the client.
As an interdisciplinary team of psychologists and psychiatrists, we handle these formalities efficiently and seamlessly for our internal clients, allowing you to focus fully on your therapeutic process.
We are also happy to offer case evaluations for external psychologists, provided we have the appropriate capacity.
Further information on the process, required documents and organizational steps can be found here.
Online Services
We also offer our services online via video. In terms of content and quality, there is no difference compared to in-person support at our practice.
Online sessions allow for location-independent participation and can make it easier to balance professional, academic, or family commitments. They also help ensure continuity of care in cases of temporary relocation or limited mobility.
Sessions take place via a secure, data protection–compliant video platform. A stable internet connection and a quiet, private space are required.
Whether online support is appropriate and feasible will be discussed together during the initial consultation.
Important note:
In acute crisis situations or in cases of risk to oneself or others, an in-person consultation is required. Certain diagnostic assessments, particularly standardized cognitive or performance-based evaluations, must also be conducted on site.
